Dr. Robert L. Head, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, was appointed the
20th president of Urbana University in June of 2001. He came to
Urbana University after serving as Vice President of Administration
and Associate Professor of Master of Business Administration at
Benedictine University in Lisle, IL, a suburb of Chicago.
Since Dr. Head’s arrival, Urbana University has experienced
a significant growth in enrollment. In addition, campus infrastructure
has been greatly enhanced; the addition of a new telecommunications
system; the renovation of two historic buildings, Barclay and
Bailey Halls; the addition of a new 116 bed residence hall in
2004; the addition of a 27,000+ square foot student center in
2006; the opening of a new $1.5 million sports stadium and the
August 2007 completion of another residence hall, which will add
more than 150 new beds. The entire campus is now networked with
fiber optics, paving the way for continued improvements in campus
technological capability. Dr. Head secured a $1.825 million Title
III grant to provide the University with a new administrative
software system to aid student services and student learning.
The new software was implemented in March 2007. Many of these
additions in the University’s infrastructure are due to
the successful capital campaign that has raised over $6 million
in less than 4 years. More improvements are planned under Dr.
Head’s leadership.
New academic programs are being offered, including a Master of
Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
Urbana University has added academic concentrations in Forensics
and Service Learning. In August of 2005, the Urbana University
Honors College was introduced which focuses on academically gifted
students.
In addition to his senior-level career in education, Dr. Head
has nearly 20 years of experience in corporate business. He was
a marketing administrator for Ohio Bell Telephone Company and
served as vice president at two bank-affiliated trust companies,
Toledo Trust in Ohio and Northern Trust in Chicago.
Dr. Head completed a Bachelor of Science in Management in 1975
from Defiance College, and served on the board of trustees of
that college for 12 years, until 2002. He earned a Master of Business
Administration in 1980 from the University of Toledo, and a master’s
degree and a doctorate in organization development from Benedictine
University. He graduated from the Institute for Educational Management
at Harvard University in 1995.
Dr. Head currently is a member of the Board of Directors of Citizens
National Bank, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and the Springfield
Art Museum. He serves as a member of the executive committee for
the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges; vice chair of the
executive committee for the Association of Independent Colleges
and Universities of Ohio; and President of the Ohio College Association
Board of Directors. He also is a member of the Organization Development
Network.
Dr. Head and his wife, Sheryl, reside in Urbana. They are parents
of three children, Robert IV, Jason and Adrienne.
